What is a tablao, and how is it different from a theatre?

A tablao is an intimate venue dedicated to live flamenco, the heir of the old cafés cantantes. Unlike a theatre, where the audience watches from a distance, the tablao is built for closeness: tables right by the stage, no microphones and no big production, with the sound of the footwork and the voice reaching you almost skin-close. That proximity is exactly what makes the experience special, and why, for a first time, we almost always recommend a tablao over a large theatrical show.

How a tablao night works

Most central tablaos run several sessions a night, usually between 6pm and 10:30pm, and the show itself lasts around 60 minutes. Arrive about 30 minutes early to find your table calmly, order your drink and soak up the room before the lights drop. You can go for the show alone or add tapas or dinner, depending on the venue; if you are there for the art, show-only is perfect. Check each venue's flamenco showtimes to pick your session.

The codes of the room

Flamenco has a simple etiquette that keeps itself once you understand why. No flash: it breaks the artists' concentration. Phone on silent. You are allowed to feel and answer the art, and a well-timed "olé" is welcome, but recording the whole performance is frowned upon.
